The majority of boys enter the school in Form 3 (age 7), although boys will be considered for Forms 4-8 if places are available.
Open Mornings take place every term and are a popular and good way to visit with the whole family enabling prospective parents and pupils to see for themselves what makes Aldro so special. The first stage in the admission procedure is usually for parents to attend an Open Morning and/or arrange to visit the school and meet the Headmaster during term time. The next stage will involve completing a Registration Form (found at the back of the prospectus) or downloading one from our website under Admissions/Registration and once this is received, together with the Registration Fee, prospective pupils will be added to the admissions list and become ‘registered boys’.
Boys should be registered by the September preceding the year of entry. (see Registration for more details). We write to parents of registered boys the year preceding entry with dates and information on the next stage in the admissions process.
The Assessment Day
Registered boys for entry in to Forms 3 and 4 will be invited to attend an Assessment Day which takes place in the month of November, a year prior to entry. Boys coming into Forms 3 and 4 will be required to complete verbal and non-verbal reasoning tasks with some creative writing and will take part in art, music and games sessions. If spaces are available, taster days with assessments can be requested on an ad-hoc basis prior to joining the school. The boys sit age appropriate assessments, some of which are completed on a computer. Boys coming into Forms 5-8 also sit age appropriate tests and time-permitting, join lessons and sport in the afternoon. We try to make the day as enjoyable as possible.
If either we, or the parents, believe that learning support may be needed, our learning support staff will be asked to contribute to the assessment. We require parents to alert us to any known learning support needs, or issues on the Registration and Entry Assessment Forms. Reports are requested from previous schools and should be received by early October (Forms 3 and 4), prior to Assessment Day. Current English, Maths and Reading Record books for Forms 3 and 4 are requested to be brought in on the Assessment Day.
If you wish to register your son for a place after the Assessment Day in November, please contact the Registrar who will make arrangements for your son to sit the assessment at another time, dependent on places being available.
Confirmed places will be offered within two weeks of the assessment. The parents of pupils offered a place are required to complete an Acceptance Form and return a deposit of £1000 to the Registrar. The deposit will be forfeited if the pupil subsequently fails to take up the place for whatever reason. This deposit will be refunded after the end of the final term (less any outstanding charges), or if a boy leaves giving one term’s notice, but is otherwise non-refundable.
