Opening of "The Crow's Nest"

The new tree house has now been officially opened. Over 100 entries were received in the competition to name this wonderful new facility and after much discussion the winner was James Newcombe with the name “The Crow’s Nest”, which fits in well with both the building’s maritime theme and the birds that live in the tree. After James cut the ribbon and officially opened “The Crow’s Nest”, the first person to descend the slide was Mrs Aston, followed shortly afterwards by the headmaster.  The climbing ropes, fireman’s pole, the bell from the SS Titanic and many other interesting things were used by the first boys allowed across to the island – who were those whose suggested names tor the house had been on the final shortlist.   We will now look forward to making the best possible use of this innovative and exciting structure!

"A Christmas Carol"

We all very much enjoyed our Senior Play this year – a fantastic production of “A Christmas Carol”.  There were plenty of great performances – including some spooky ghosts, an impressive pair of narrators in the form of Silas Barrow and Doug (not to mention their “scapegoat”, Toby Crisp), along with Bob Cratchit.  And as for Scrooge himself – well, he was extremely sinister to start with, but certainly became much more pleasant as the play progressed!  Well done to the producer, Mrs Thompson and many thanks to a good number of Mothers who helped with the excellent costumes and make-up.  But especially well done to all the cast and back stage crew – it was a wonderful show!

James Bond Day

It was great to see all the boys and staff enter wholeheartedly into the spirit of James Bond day. A huge amount of thought and effort had gone into the outfits and there was a wonderful buzz throughout the day. One boy had been gearing up to the event with such excitement he signed himself in at lunch as "Bond, James Bond!" Many thanks to everyone for the way in which they contributed to the success of the day.

We raised £300.79 on the day which will be sent to our nominated charity Change of Scene.

Sherborne Rugby Tour

Thirty four boys and 5 staff members travelled to Dorset for the annual Sherborne School rugby tour during the October half-term.  The boys experienced coaching from Baths Danny Grewcock and Sherborne 1st XV rugby staff.  The three day tour ended with fixtures against Highfield, Kings House and Hall Grove.  It was a great start to the upcoming rugby season with the touring  A side winning  all their matches comfortably scoring a number of excellent tries, while the touring B side with a mixture of abilities enjoyed the experience but struggled to contain their opposition which were mainly close to full strength A sides from other schools.

Starfish Malawi

Aldro has been supporting Starfish Malawi for a number of years and it was very good to welcome Roly and Rosie Bell to the school to talk to the boys about the work that this charity does in one of the poorest countries in the world.  They made the boys understand the extent of the poverty by explaining how long it would take for a worker there to earn enough to pay for a packet of cornflakes – seven and a half days!  It was also good to see some pictures of the school in Malawi with which we are directly linked, in a village called Simiwaya.  Wilfred Deverell (Form 7) was presented with a certificate to thank him for a raising £150 for Starfish Malawi in a sponsored swim that he had undertaken - and it was fantastic that we raised over £1300 for this charity at our Harvest festival services in the chapel.

Form 8 Boy Swims the Channel

On 27 September, William Sutcliffe a form 8 pupil, became one of the youngest ever to complete a relay swim of the Channel.  He swam with three members of his family, under the strict rules of the Channel Swimming Association….no wetsuits and equal amounts of time in the water. The swim took just over 16 hours and was completed at 10.15 pm. William had to swim 4 hours, which included the last hour in complete darkness to the French coast, in one of the biggest tides of the year.

The swim was to raise funds for Cherry Trees, the respite home near Guildford, and there will be a fundraising event at the school later in the year.
