Communication: In the first instance communication should always be through the Headmaster although an avenue of contact to the Governors is also open through the Chairman, Mr Tim John’s, and letters can be addressed to him via the School Office.
Committees: The Governors have two committees: the Finance & General Purposes Committee (F&GPC) and the Education & Pastoral Care Committee (EPCC)
Mr James Geffen - Appointed: April 2018
James is Vice-Chairman of Governors, Chairman of the Admissions & Marketing committee and a member of the F&GPC - A former Board Member and Senior Partner of Miller Insurance Services LLP until integrating the Reinsurance business into Willis Towers Watson and retiring. He is Patron of The Prince's Trust where he has held several volunteering roles. James is an Old Aldronian, married to Lizzie and they live in Shackleford. They have two sons who were both pupils at Aldro and went on to Tonbridge.
Mrs Iona Gunner - Appointed: September 2020
Iona is a member of the EPCC and Admissions & Marketing - Previously Head of Juniors at Aldro, Head of Lower School at Glendower and latterly Head of Digital Learning at St Swithun's Prep School. Over 30 years she has educated and nurtured boys and girls aged 2-13, been mother to an Old Aldronian and daughter, and pursued her love of gardening. She read English and Education at Cambridge and is presently studying for her MA in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy for Children, Adolescents & Families.
Mrs Sarah Hunt - Appointed: September 2017
Sarah is a member of the F&GPC - She read law at Downing College, Cambridge and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple. She is a member of chambers at 7 Kings Bench Walk and specialises in all areas of commercial law. Sarah is married to Andy, who is the Housemaster of Lockites, Charterhouse. They have four young children.

Tim is Chairman of Governors, the EPCC and a member of the Admissions & Marketing- Headmaster of The Hawthorns School, Bletchingley, for 23 years (500+ pupils, co-ed, aged 3-13 / near Reigate, Surrey), until his retirement in 2015. Chairman of IAPS Council 2011-12 and ISI inspector. Strong on personal / professional development, he has overseen significant school improvements and brings a wealth of experience in prep school leadership, change management and commitment to the Christian aims of Aldro. He is a keen sportsman, musician and family man.
Mr Tom Jones - Appointed: November 2020
Tom is a member of the F&GPC – Educated at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff, he is a Senior Principal in the London office of Populous. He is a member of the UK Government Sports Economy Sector Advisory Group and a Vice President of the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS). He and his wife Debs help to run Pre-Marriage courses at Busbridge and Hambledon Church and they have two sons who are currently at Aldro.
Mr Ed Reid - Appointed: November 2016
Ed is Staff Liason governor and a member of the EPCC - Educated at Charterhouse, followed by reading Maths at Christ Church, Oxford. Ed taught at Radley for three years, during which he was a resident Assistant Housemaster and Master in charge of Racquets. He returned to Charterhouse as a teacher in 2001; since then he has held various positions, including Master of the Yearlings and Master of the Under School. In September 2015 he took over as Housemaster of Verites. He is married to Jean and they have two young children. As well as sporting interests, Ed enjoys reading, music and theatre and is an active member of Binscombe Church. Ed has been a regular visitor to Aldro to preach in Chapel and to referee football matches.
The Revd Margot Spencer - Appointed: June 2017
Margot is a member of the EPCC and lead Governor on Safeguarding - Assistant Vicar at Busbridge and Hambledon Church, and joined the Board in March 2017. Prior to her ordination, Margot’s working life was varied – from a nursery teacher to practice manager of a GP surgery. Margot is married to Andy; they have three married daughters and six grandchildren.
Mr Mervyn Thomas CMG - Appointed: September 2020
Mervyn is a member of the EPCC and Admissions & Marketing - and has many years experience as a school governor in both state and independent sectors. He is currently a Governor at Monkton Combe School, and for several years was Chairman of Barfield Prep School in Farnham. He is the Founder President of religious freedom charity CSW, and advises the Foreign Secretary as a member of his Human Rights Advisory Group. In 2019 HM Queen appointed Mervyn a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG), for his services to Human Rights and Freedom of Religion or Belief. He and his wife Wendy are enthusiastic members of Emmaus Road church in Guildford, and have two grown up children.
Mr Ian Waller FCA - Appointed: November 2020
Ian chairs the F & GPC - Ian was a senior audit partner and Vice Chairman at Deloitte, where he has advised and audited many large public companies. Ian is a director of a Guildford youth charity, a business enterprise mentor for the Prince’s Trust and a fund trustee and mentor at Charterhouse school. Ian lives in Guildford and is married with two daughters and a son (who attended Aldro)
Mr Garth Williams - Appointed: October 2011
Garth is a member of the F&GPC - Educated at Clifton College Bristol, followed by Lincoln College Oxford. Deputy Head of RGS Guildford since 2008. Formerly Assistant Head at Alleyn’s, Housemaster at Dean Close and Head of History at Wellington College. Garth is married to Juliet who is a Doctor and works part-time at Frimley Hospital. They have four children.
Mr Tim Woodhouse - Appointed: April 2018
Tim is a member of the F&GPC - A senior underwriter for Axis, specialising in international war and terrorism insurance. He is an OA, a recent parent and a former Chairman of the Old Aldronian Association. He is on the leadership team and treasurer of Kings Church, Guildford. Tim is married to Emily and father to three boys, two of whom left Aldro to Stowe and Charterhouse.
