the 1898 Fund
For over 125 years, since the school was founded in 1898, pupils at Aldro have enjoyed an outstanding education which instils a life-long love of learning, equips them to be positive contributors to society and allows them the freedom to flourish.
The 1898 Fund has been established to raise significant bursary provision, so that as many young people as possible can benefit from the first-class education that Aldro offers. To mark 100 yeas of the Old Aldronian Association, we have also launched our OA 100 - a campaign to recruit 100 Old Aldronians to support the 1898 Bursary Fund through regular giving.

Why bursaries?
In line with the core values of the school, Aldro has always offered generous bursary provision to enable children, who would otherwise not be able to afford it, to benefit from the outstanding education on offer.
Bursaries provide a great opportunity for the recipient, but they also bring a variety and breadth of life experience, which enriches the whole school community.
Hear how an Aldro bursary really gave Matthew the opportunity to flourish.

Why now?
Each year a significant proportion of the school’s income is allocated to bursaries and many pupils over the years have benefitted from this provision. Aldro is committed to providing transformational opportunities for young people, because it is the right thing to do.
In fact, we are aiming to increase our bursary provision. Over the next few years our aim is to be offering the equivalent of ten fully funded places, of which a significant proportion would be genuinely transformational (over 70% of full fees) for those who, previously, may not have even considered coming to a school like Aldro.

How much?
Currently, a fully funded day place costs approximately £25,000 per year, so our target of ten bursaries will require funding of at least £250,000 per year.
We are hoping to meet this target through a combination of both significant one-off giving and continued annual giving.
- £25,000 (or £18,980 with Gift Aid) would provide a fully funded place for one child for one year
- £50,000 would provide a fully funded place for two years (e.g. Forms 7 & 8)
- £150,000 would fund a child all the way through Aldro (Forms 3 to 8)
- £500,000 would provide investment income to fund a bursary place in perpetuity.
Regular Giving - The 1898 Club
We want to encourage as many people as possible to contribute to the 1898 Fund. Consequently, we have established the 1898 Club for regular givers, using a variety of ‘Giving Teams’ linked to Argyle Trophy team colours or M. Lombardot’s golden rugby team!
You can set up your regular contribution to the 1898 fund through our secure donation platform where you can select the amount, frequency and duration of gift payments. Please note that there is a maximum debit amount of £5,000.
What's your 'Giving Team'?

One-off Donations
Single donations of up to £5,000 can be made to the 1898 Fund through our secure donation platform. If you would like to donate a larger value or by an alternative method such as cheque or bank transfer, then please contact Nick Margesson at development@aldro.org.
OA 100

In the summer of 2026, we will be celebrating 100 years of the Old Aldronian Association. To mark this historic occasion, we are launching the ‘OA 100' campaign. Our aim is to encourage 100 Old Aldronians to support the 1898 Bursary Fund through regular giving.
In line with our regular giving 1898 Club, if 100 OAs joined the ‘Green Team’ in giving £18.98 per month, tax efficiently, this would fund a pupil on a full bursary throughout their time at Aldro.
To join the 'Green Team' and become an OA 100 you can set up your regular giving via our safe and secure form:

Legacy Giving
Leaving a legacy to Aldro is a highly personal way of supporting the school and is a powerful way help future generations flourish. We would be very happy to chat with you about legacy giving options.
Tax Benefits
There are a variety of government incentives for donors in the way of tax breaks, which can not only increase the value of donations to the school, but can also reduce the tax burden for donors. If you are a UK tax payer then under current rules, if you leave 10% or more of your chargeable net estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax (IHT) rate on the whole of your taxable estate is reduced from 40% to 36%. This type of residuary gift is generally of the greatest benefit to the School as its value increases in line with inflation.
Details
If you would like to leave a legacy to Aldro in your will then your solicitor will need to know the school's charity name and number:
Name: Aldro Educational Trust Registered Charity number: 312072Recognition of Donors
We are very grateful for everyone who supports the Aldro community in a variety of ways. Those who support the school financially, either through one-off donations or as part of the 1898 Club, enjoy regular updates on how their gifts are being used by the school.
