Sport for All

Sport plays a huge role at Aldro and in the lives of all our pupils. Our aim is to promote enjoyment and a sense of fun through participation in all sports whilst endeavouring to improve skill levels and develop an understanding of the values that are the backbone of team sports.

All pupils play sport five days a week and we pride ourselves on fielding representative teams covering the whole spectrum of abilities on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday match days.

We strongly encourage participation and strive to breed a desire to be active and healthy. We work hard to develop team spirit and an overall understanding of both winning and losing in order to develop well- rounded young sports people.  There is no better example of the ethos of the school than the annual Grimston Cup.  Every pupil in the school takes part in this cross-country competition by year group and the pupils all cheer on their Squad team mates. We are determined to deliver sport for all whilst maintaining our position as one of the best prep schools for sport in Surrey.

Our main stream sports are Football, Netball, Rugby and Rugby Sevens, Hockey and Cricket, but we play a host of other sports too. Every pupil gets the opportunity to represent Aldro across all the major sports.  We also have provision in place for pupils who do not want to play certain sports (e.g. non-contact group for rugby).

We also run a programme of additional sports that include cross country, swimming, athletics, sailing and rowing, whist our bespoke PE curriculum offers basketball, badminton, health & fitness and in the summer swimming and athletics.

Coaching

We are fortunate to have a large number of staff with various experience who support the Sports Department and help deliver our programmes. The team also includes specialist coaches, many of whom also coach at local clubs such as Guildford Rugby Club, Guildford Hockey Club, Vipers Netball and various local cricket clubs. We also have a range of additional sports clubs run by Kickstart Football, Martin Bicknell Cricket Academy, Phillipa Hogan School of Dance, Prestige Gymnastics Academy and Procoach Judo.

Competitions & Tournaments

As a school we enter various competitions and tournaments on our circuit including IAPS competitions in netball, hockey, cricket & swimming as well as county competitions in Surrey. In 2026 Aldro have been responsible for introducing the first ever Surrey Cup for Girls cricket at U13 & U11 levels.

Sports Tours

Sports tours are a fantastic way for children to not only build on their sports skills but also enhance their independence and confidence.

In the last couple of years the 1st X1 boys cricket squad headed out to South Africa for a very successful cricket tour. A great time was had by all, as the team got to take cable cars up Table Mountain and visited a cheetah sanctuary, all whilst remaining unbeaten in all matches!

In August of 2024 we took football teams and netball teams on a very successful tour in Spain.

Scholarship preparation

For our most able and talented pupils we run a programme called the Aldro Sports Pathway. This is in place to support and guide our most able sports pupils.
